Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision in non-conference action to the Georgia Southern Eagles, Saturday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman drops to 4-6 on the season while Georgia Southern improves to 6-3 overall.
In doubles, the Paladins won at No. 1 and No. 2 to secure the point and take a 1-0 lead.
Jerry Barton and
Elijah Poritzky got things started for Furman at No. 2 with a 6-1 win over Alexandros Roumpis and Aaron James Williams. Georgia Southern answered with a win at No. 3 before
Cole Burnam and
Thomas Kennedy, playing at the No. 1 position, captured the point with a 6-4 triumph versus Judson Blair and Pol del Castillo Masich.
The Eagles came back in singles play to win four times and pick up the 4-1 match victory. Georgia Southern recorded victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, with all four matches having gone three sets.
Williams and Pierre Mouesca posted back-to-back wins at No. 2 and No. 3 against Kennedy and Poritzky to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. Williams knocked off Kennedy 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Mouesca defeated Poritzky 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3. Dimitris Paliouras followed with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win over Burnam in the No. 4 match. Castillo Masich won the match for Georgia Southern following a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory at No. 1 versus Barton.
The Paladins finish out their homestand next Wednesday, March 1, hosting Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m.
