GREENVILLE, S.C.. --
Jaelyn Acker scored a game high 15 points and Furman used hot perimeter shooting to beat Samford, 62-45, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
With the victory Furman (11-18, 3-11 SoCon) will take the league's No. 7 seed into SoCon Tournament play, where it will face No. 2 seed Chattanooga next Thursday in 3:30 p.m. first round matchup at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C.
Acker's 15 points came on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range and headlined the Paladins' season best, 8-of-17 shooting (.471) from beyond the arc.
Janay Outten and
Evie DePetro followed Acker with 12-point scoring performances, and
Jada Session paced all rebounders with 10 caroms.
The win was Furman's sixth straight over Samford in Greenville and halted a four-game losing skid.
The Paladins grabbed control of the contest early, racing to a 22-7 lead after one period and were never threatened after taking a 36-21 lead into halftime.
Andrea Bailey was the only Samford player to reach double figures with 10 points.
The strong work from 3-point range helped Furman finish the contest shooting 42.4 percent from the field (25x59).
Samford connected on just 19-of-59 shots (.322) and was outrebounded by Furman, 45-31.
Acker's five 3-pointers were just one shy of her season high, and Outten's 12 points matched a career high.
The game marked the final home contest for Paladin All-SoCon graduate forward
Grace van Rij. Â The Knoxville, Tenn., product topped the career 900-point plateau (901) in the contest with her seven points, which she combined with five rebounds.
