Furman Falls To Chattanooga In SoCon First Round, 63-52

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Raven Thompson scored 17 points and headlined a fourth quarter surge that carried Southern Conference Tournament No. 2 seed Chattanooga past No. 7 Furman, 63-52, in first round tournament action Thursday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center.

With the win Chattanooga (18-12) advances into Friday's semifinal round to face the winner of Thursday's evening East Tennessee State vs. Samford game.  Furman (11-19) completes its season with the loss.

The Paladins grabbed a 19-12 first quarter lead, led 27-24 at intermission, and went up 39-29 on a Jada Session layup off an offensive rebound with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.

Chattanooga responded with a 7-2 spurt to end the period, capped by a Jazz Wazeerud-Din 3-pointer with 34 seconds to go.

The Mocs' continued their comeback in the fourth quarter, taking a 44-43 lead on a pair of Addie Porter free throw three minutes into the frame.

Wazeerud-Din drilled another 3-pointer on UTC's next possession to complete the 10-2 run for a 47-43 lead.

Thompson, who contributed eight points in the fourth period, gave Chattanooga its first double digit lead, 57-47, with a three-point play with 1:15 to go.

UTC connected on 7-of-11 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers in outscoring Furman, 21-6, over the game's final 10 minutes.  For the game Chattanooga shot 40.7 percent (22x54).

Wazeerud-Din made 5-of-8 treys in the contest.

Furman was paced by freshman guard Jaelyn Acker's 13 points.  Graduate All-SoCon forward Grace van Rij, playing her final game as a Paladin, finished with 11 points, and Jada Session had 10.

The Paladins shot 35.8 percent from the field (19x54) but connected on just 8-of-27 field goal attempts in the second half.

Furman fashioned a 38-30 rebounding advantage but were guilty of 18 turnovers.
