Lynchburg, Va. – Kelly Scott scored a game high five goals on Saturday afternoon to lead the Liberty Flames to a 19-6 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team at Liberty Lacrosse Field.
Furman drops to 3-4 overall while Liberty improves to 4-5 on the season.
The Flames opened the game on an 8-1 run and scored the first six goals, leading 6-0 with 13:45 remaining in the second quarter.
Hannah Dintino would record the Paladins' first two goals as they trailed 8-2 at the 6:34 mark of the first half. Liberty answered with the final two goals of the quarter and led 10-2 at halftime.
Furman closed out the third quarter with four of the last six goals from Dintino,
Meagan Beal,
Paige Harman, and
Anna Roser. The Flames began with three consecutive goals, closing out a 5-0 run, to push their lead out to 13-2 less than five minutes into the second half. Roser's goal with 25 seconds left made the score 14-6.
Liberty outscored the Paladins 4-0 in the fourth quarter to secure the 19-6 win.
Dintino led Furman offensively with her third straight hat trick while picking up two ground balls, winning two draws, and causing one turnover. Beal, who had a team best five draws, and Harman both contributed one goal and one assist, while
Sophie Shaw dished out one assist.
Grace Gibson compiled three ground balls and
Katelyn Sousa had three caused turnovers. In goal,
Lily Rathbun made seven saves and totaled a team high four ground balls.
Scott registered seven points for the Flames on five goals and two assists. Five different players added two goals while Celena Kerr posted a game high three assists. In goal, Taylor Gallarello made five saves.
Furman, who forced Liberty into 15 turnovers, concluded the game with 16 ground balls and 10 draws.
The Paladins begin Big South Conference play next Wednesday, March 29 hosting Longwood at Paladin Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
