AWENDAW, S.C. -- Furman sophomore Will Morlan (-18) fired a final-round 64 to win the individual championship Tuesday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay at the par 72, 7,349 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Morlan put together an almost perfect final round to win the title, his third of the 2022-23 season and the first solo win of his career. He teed off on No. 10 and birdied his first hole then birdied three out of five holes from No. 14 through No. 18 to turn at 4-under. After the turn, Morlan birdied No. 1 and No. 4 then concluded the tournament by birdieing three of his last four holes, for a total of nine birdies and just one bogey on the day. Â
Morlan, whose 18-under par is both a Furman and tournament 54-hole record, won the Hootie at Bulls Bay by two strokes over Kentucky's Alex Goff (-16). He led the field with 21 birdies over the tournament's 54 holes and posted a tournament-best 3.63 scoring average on the par 4s.Â
Morlan becomes the first Paladin to win three individual titles in a season since Brad Faxon accomplished the feat in 1983. In September, Morlan tied for the individual championship at the Old Town Collegiate with a three-round score of 10-under then he tied for individual medalist honors at the Furman Intercollegiate at 9-under in October.Â
Senior Ross Funderburke (-6) carded a final-round 70 with three birdies on Tuesday to tie for 21st. Senior Sam Lape (+6) eagled the par-5 No. 2 and added a birdie on No. 14 to tie for 68th after posting a 75 in the final round, while freshman Harris Barth (+7) scored a 78 with three birdies in round three to tie for 77th. Sophomore Trey Diehl (+13) tallied a 79 with a birdie on No. 4, tying for 77th. Â
No. 41 East Tennessee State (-40) set a tournament scoring record to win the Hootie at Bulls Bay by 7 strokes over New Mexico (-33). N.C. State (-32) was third, followed by No. 40 Purdue (-3) in fourth and No. 47 Missouri (-26) in fifth. The Paladins (-11) finished tenth, ahead of Power 5 opponents Wisconsin (-9 11th) and Virginia Tech (-7 12th).
Furman will square off at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., April 10-12.
