Greenville, S.C. – Sophie Shaw scored with one second remaining to give the Furman women's lacrosse team its first victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, a 12-11 triumph over the Stonehill Skyhawks at Paladin Stadium.
Furman improves to 1-3 on the season while Stonehill drops to 0-5 overall.
Anna Roser gave the Paladins an 11-8 lead early in the fourth quarter with her third goal of the afternoon before the Skyhawks responded with a 3-0 run over the next 10 minutes to tie the score at 11-11 following Emily LaPia's free position goal with 1:49 left in the contest. Shaw was fouled inside the 8-meter arc with four seconds to go and was awarded a free position attempt. The junior from Granville, Ohio scored with one second left past Skyhawk goalie Claire Smith to lift Furman to the one-goal victory.
Stonehill opened the game scoring three consecutive goals and led 3-0 at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter. The Paladins responded by scoring five straight goals, including two from Roser, to hold a 5-3 advantage with 7:07 left in the first half.
Paige Harman's first goal of the season with nine seconds to go sent Furman into halftime leading 6-4.
The Skyhawks raced out to a two-goal advantage less than five minutes into the second half, scoring four straight times to lead 8-6 at the 10:35 mark of the third quarter. Furman answered with four consecutive goals of its own over the next 10:32, capped by
Meagan Beal's goal with two seconds left, to lead 10-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
Beal and Roser both netted hat tricks for the Paladins while
Hannah Dintino led all players with four points on two goals and two assists. Harman contributed two goals and Beal won a match high six draws. Four different players picked up three ground balls each while three others caused two turnovers.
In goal,
Lily Rathbun finished with a season high 12 saves.
Emma Sullivan and Victoria Butler had hat tricks to pace Stonehill offensively while Lydia Rudden dished out two assists. In goal, Smith made nine saves.
Furman concluded the contest with 18 ground balls and 11 draws while forcing the Skyhawks into 17 turnovers, the most of any Paladin opponent this season.
Furman begins a three-game road trip on Saturday, March 11 traveling to Norfolk, Va. to face Old Dominion at 12 p.m.
