SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Furman dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to San Diego State Wednesday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. With the score knotted at 3-all, Alicia Melosch came from behind to beat Sara Snyder, 5-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) at flight three singles to clinch the match for the Aztecs.
The Paladins (5-10, 2-0 SoCon) won two doubles matches to claim the first point. Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja topped senior Madison Dillon and freshman Luca Victoria Vocke, 6-2, at flight three before Furman won the final two contests for the point. Sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson blew past Dariya Detkovskaya and Tamara Arnold, 6-2, to set up the decisive flight one match, where sophomores Jess Dawson and Snyder held on for a 7-6(4) advantage over Rania Azzia and Alicia Melosch.
In singles action, Dillon downed Julia Jordan, 6-4, 6-1, at flight six to push the Furman lead to 2-0, but Cecile Morin answered with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Vocke at number five to cut the Paladin advantage to 2-1. Dawson won, 6-1, 6-4, over Azzia at flight four to put the Paladins ahead, 3-2, before Arnold held off Schulson, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, in the top-seeded match up to tie the match at 3-all and set up the decisive flight three contest.
After a three-week hiatus, Furman will return to action at SoCon foe Wofford on March 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the battle for the Pinson Cup.
