Johnson City, Tenn. – The Furman men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback in Southern Conference play to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers, Sunday afternoon at Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
Furman drops to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon. With the win, East Tennessee State improves to 8-11 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
In doubles, the Buccaneers swept all three matches to claim the point and take a 1-0 lead. In the No. 1 match, the duo of
Jerry Barton and
Elijah Poritzky fell 6-2 to Adam Nagoudi and Peter Kalocsai, and
Cole Burnam and
Thomas Kennedy, playing at No. 2, dropped a 6-2 decision to Francisco Lamas and Thiago Pernas.
Ben Cahill and
Alex Han were edged in their No. 3 match to Juan Lombisano and Dimitri Badra 7-6.
East Tennessee State followed in singles action winning five of the six matches to collect the 6-1 victory. Three of the six matches went into a third set with the Buccaneers picking up two of the wins. Kennedy, competing at the No. 4 position, defeated Nagoudi in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The win was Kennedy's eighth of the season and fourth in his last five matches.
The Paladins wrap up their three-match SoCon road trip on Saturday, April 8 traveling to Charleston, S.C. for an 11 a.m. match at The Citadel.
