Greenville, S.C. – Anna Roser and
Sophie Shaw both registered a game high eight points on Saturday afternoon to lead the Furman women's lacrosse team to a 22-16 victory on Senior Day over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at Paladin Stadium.
Furman improves to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the Big South. With the loss, Gardner-Webb falls to 3-12 on the year and 2-5 in conference play.
Prior to Saturday's final regular season home contest, the Paladins held their Senior Day festivities honoring six student-athletes:
Meagan Beal,
Bella Benoit,
Libby Bowen,
Tabitha Conrad,
Hannah Dintino, and
Alana Epstein.
Furman's 22-goal performance tied the program record for most in a single game, matching the original mark set back on April 20, 2019 in a 22-0 victory over Howard in Greenville.
The Paladins closed out the game's final nine minutes scoring five consecutive goals from five different players. Brittany Sherrod's goal with 10:16 remaining in the contest cut the Runnin' Bulldogs deficit down to 17-16, only to see Furman respond with three goals over a stretch of 1:43 to extend its lead to 20-16 on
Sophia Buzelis' second of the game. Roser followed two minutes later and Beal's goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation secured the Paladins' 22-16 win.
Furman opened the game on a 6-2 run before Gardner-Webb answered with five of the next six to tie the score at 7-7 with 1:58 left before intermission. The Paladins scored twice during the last 57 seconds of the second quarter from Beal and Shaw to lead 9-7 at halftime.
Furman outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 7-5 over the first 13 minutes of the second half and went in front 16-12 at the 2:21 mark of the third quarter when Shaw scored unassisted. Gardner-Webb came back with a 4-1 run of its own and trailed 17-16 with 10:16 to go in the fourth quarter.
Offensively, Roser and Shaw both compiled a team-leading eight points in the victory. Shaw's eight points were a career high highlighted by a career best six goals. Roser tied her career high of eight points and dished out a career best four assists. Beal compiled seven points on five goals and two assists. Dintino scored twice and won a career high 11 draws.
Molly Faul picked up a career high four ground balls and
Andrea Fisher caused two turnovers. In goal,
Lily Rathbun finished with seven saves and three ground balls.
Jada Preston led the Runnin' Bulldogs with six points on three goals and three assists, while Bria Foley and Rylee Gonzalez both registered five points. Foley scored a team high four goals. Danielle Burke totaled 15 saves in goal to go with three ground balls.
The Paladins, who forced Gardner-Webb into 15 turnovers, set two program records on Saturday with 48 shots and 29 draws. Furman held a 29-13 advantage in draws and 18-15 in ground balls.
The Paladins begin their two-game road trip to close out the regular season on Wednesday, April 26, traveling to Spartanburg for a 6 p.m. opening draw at Wofford.
