Furman Picks Up Road Win at High Point, 16-15

Paladins Defeat Panthers for First Time in Program History

High Point, N.C. – Meagan Beal and Anna Roser both scored five goals on Wednesday evening to lead the Furman women's lacrosse team to a 16-15 Big South road win over the High Point Panthers at Vert Stadium.

With the win, Furman evens its overall record to 5-5 while improving to 2-1 in the Big South. High Point drops to 2-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Paladins outscored the Panthers 7-1 to end the first half and held a seven-goal advantage at halftime. High Point had cut Furman's lead to 5-4 with 3:54 left in the first quarter before the Paladins answered with back-to-back goals over the final three minutes to hold a 7-4 lead. The Furman defense limited the Panthers to just one goal in the second quarter. The Paladins then used a 5-0 run that covered the last 13:04 of the half to lead 12-5 at intermission. Paige Harman extended Furman's lead to seven with 4:31 remaining before halftime.

High Point came out to start the second half by scoring five consecutive goals and trimmed the Paladins' advantage to 12-10 at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter. Roser responded with two straight goals over the last 1:09 to extend Furman's lead to 14-10.

The Paladins would push their lead to 16-11 less than five minutes into the fourth quarter capped by goals over a 24-second stretch by Beal and Roser. The Panthers' comeback in the final period fell one goal short after scoring the last four of the contest. After High Point made the score 16-15 with 24 seconds left, Beal was able to win the final draw and allow Furman to run out the clock.

The win was the Paladins' first in program history over the Panthers.

Beal, who also won 10 draws, led all players with a game high seven points, tying her season high, after registering five goals and two assists. Roser set new season highs with six points and five goals. Harman and Hannah Dintino both recorded four points while Sophie Shaw and Sophia Buzelis each tallied three. In goal, Lily Rathbun made nine saves while causing two turnovers and matching her career high of seven ground balls.

Mena Loescher paced High Point with five points on four goals and one assist. Pia Cavallaro and Esprit Cha both compiled four points on three goals and one assist. Goalie Taylor Suplee finished with six ground balls, three saves, and two caused turnovers.

Furman concluded the contest with 12 ground balls and held a 20-15 advantage in draws.

The Paladins are back at home Saturday afternoon to host Winthrop at 1 p.m.
