GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman head football coach
Clay Hendrix announced today the addition of three transfer offensive linemen to the program.
Joining the Paladins are
Kody Varn, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound graduate of Newberry College;
Fred Norman, Jr., a 6-foot-7, 340-pound graduate of East Tennessee State; and
Tex Elliott, a 6-foot-4, 295-pound redshirt junior from Colorado State.
Varn has one season of eligibility remaining, Norman two years, and Elliott three seasons of eligibility.
Varn saw action in 22 games over four seasons (2019-22) at Newberry, where he earned second team All-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2022 after helping the Wolves go 9-2 and repeat as SAC champions. The Clinton, S.C., product secured his undergraduate degree in sports management from Newberry in the spring of 2022 and recently added a master's in organizational development and leadership, also from Newberry.
Norman registered playing time in 34 games and made 23 starts over four seasons (2019-22) at ETSU, three of which included work under now current Furman offensive line coach
Matt McCutchan. After redshirting in 2019, he started in all six games for the Buccaneers in 2020 en route to earning SoCon All-Freshman Team honors. In 2021 he played a pivotal role in ETSU's SoCon Championship season, earning starts in all 13 games and helping pave the way for one of the most potent rushing attacks in program history. Last fall the Rossville, Ga., product appeared in 10 games and registered four starts for the Bucs.
A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Elliott was a three-year member of Colorado State's program, appearing in one game for the Rams in 2022.
Furman has picked up four graduate transfers and one undergraduate transfer this year. In January the Paladins announced the addition of Wingate (N.C.) University graduate defensive lineman
Sirod Cook, and in May Furman added Ferris State (Mich.) graduate tight end
Mason Pline.
Furman, coming off a 10-3 season a year ago that included a second round appearance in the FCS playoffs, is projected to return 18 starters and 38 players from its 44-man two-deep this fall off a squad that finished ranked a consensus 10th in both major FCS polls.
The Paladins were recently picked fifth and sixth, respectively, in FCS Preseason Top 25 Polls conducted by HERO Sports and Athlon Sports.
Furman kicks off the 2023 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 31 when its plays host to Tennessee Tech in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Paladin Stadium, and the next week (Sept. 9) takes on South Carolina in a 7:30 p.m. SEC Network/ESPN+ televised contest.
