Furman Tops Georgia State in Non-Conference Finale, 3-1

Navarro Finishes with First Career Double-Double

Greenville, S.C. – Ava Augustson and Emily Navarro both recorded double-doubles on Friday evening to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23) victory over the Georgia State Panthers in its final non-conference match of the season at Alley Gymnasium.

Furman, who pushes its winning streak to four straight matches, improves to 9-2 on the season while Georgia State drops to 3-7 overall. The Paladins match their best start to a season since the 2012 squad also began with a 9-2 record.

Augustson led all players with a match high 16 kills, to go with 10 digs, for her third double-double of the year while Izzy Castelloe tied her career best of nine kills and Lindsay Walch contributed eight. Navarro, a freshman Davie, Fla., registered her double-double on 32 assists and a career high 13 digs. Defensively, Kennedy Seekford led the team with 18 digs and Lauren Haynes added 15.

Erin Wyatt paced the Panthers offensively with eight kills while Livy Kowalkowski and Jenna Brown both contributed double-doubles. Kowalkowski posted 10 assists and 24 digs, and Brown tallied 13 assists and 11 digs. Laughlin Murray also dished out 13 assists.

Furman trailed 18-12 midway through the first set after a third consecutive attack error forced a timeout. The Paladins responded by closing out the set on a 13-3 run for the 25-21 victory. Behind the serving of Kaeli Braswell, Furman scored seven straight points during the run with Augustson and Castelloe combining for seven kills.

The Paladins opened the second set on an 8-4 run and held a 19-13 advantage late following a service error. After Georgia State cut the lead to three, Furman scored five of the next nine points and was at set point leading 24-20 when Castelloe connected on a kill. The Panthers answered by recording the last six points to win 26-24.

The third set featured 11 ties and six lead changes with the Paladins using a late run to capture the frame. With the score even at 19-19, Furman used a 6-1 run to claim the 25-20 triumph. Georgia State trimmed the Paladins' lead down to 21-20 before the hosts registered the final four points. A kill from Walch and solo block by McGrath gave Furman the victory.

The fourth set was also close throughout with neither team leading by more than four points, which came when Augustson's service ace put the Paladins in front 6-2. Furman then led 13-9 midway off a solo block from Augustson before the Panthers went on a 9-4 run to go ahead 18-17. Furman answered with a 7-4 run of its own and was at set point leading 24-22 following Sydney Tanner's kill. Tanner captured the set, and match, for the Paladins two points later.

Both teams concluded the match hitting .130 overall while Furman held a 51-42 advantage in kills, 44-40 in assists, and 72-69 in digs.

The Paladins open Southern Conference play on the road next weekend, September 22-23, at Western Carolina and East Tennessee State.
