GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team dominated singles, winning four out of six matches, Sunday in the final day of the 36th annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, which was held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.  

Freshman Maeve Thornton defeated Given Roach of Georgia Tech, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(13-11), at flight three, and junior Sara Snyder finished fifth in the flight four draw with a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over Auburn's Adeline Flach.  

In the tournament's extra matches, junior Ellie Schulson downed Maddy Zampardo of N.C. State, 6-4, 6-4, and freshman Macy Hitchcock beat Ali DeSpain of Auburn, 6-3, 6-1. 

Nine of the 14 teams which competed in this weekend's tournament were ranked in the top 33 in the 2023 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings:  Georgia (2), N.C. State (4), Ohio State (10),Tennessee (14), Duke (11), Auburn (17), Georgia Tech (20), Wake Forest (27), and South Carolina (33).  Also, Clemson finished the season ranked 45th, Alabama was 62nd, and Indiana concluded 2023 in 68th place. Besides the Paladins, Mississippi State completed the field.

Furman will compete at the Charleston Southern Invitational, Sept. 22-23, in Charleston, S.C.
