Furman, ETSU Open SoCon Play With Scoreless Draw

Paladins Travel To Western Carolina On Sunday

Greenville, S.C. – Senior Addison Corn recorded a pair of saves to notch her third shutout of the season as Furman earned a scoreless draw versus East Tennessee State in the Southern Conference women's soccer opener for both teams on Thursday night at Stone Stadium.

"We played low risk soccer in the back and were able to get another shutout," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "Addison Corn came up with a big save for us in the first half and the back line was solid all night. We are still missing some players due to injury and figuring out how to score goals, but we will look to build on this result as we head to Western Carolina."

Corn, a native of Marietta, Ga., came up big for the Paladins in the opening half by stopping two shots, including a sliding save on Ava Matherne's effort midway through the period when she charged off her line to deny the ETSU forward on a breakaway. Matherne wiggled free in the box a few minutes later, but senior Miya Poplin made a sliding tackle to win the ball.

Furman (4-3-2, 0-0-1 SoCon) dominated the play for much of the second half. Midfielder Shania Diaz created the Paladins' best scoring opportunity when her free kick from the left wing caromed off the cross bar in the opening minutes of the period. Ashlyn Goila dribbled into the box and narrowly missed on her shot towards the left post in the final 15 minutes of play in a match that featured few clear-cut scoring chances for both sides.

The Paladins finished with a 6-4 edge in total shots and 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

ETSU's Ashton Blair, who notched two saves and handled several crosses among Furman's eight corner kicks, earned the clean sheet for the Buccaneers (4-1-4, 0-0-1 SoCon).

Furman is back in action Sunday afternoon when it travels to Cullowhee, N.C., to face Western Carolina. Kickoff at the Catamount Soccer Complex is set for 1 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
