Johnson City, Tenn. – Three different Paladins collected double-doubles on Saturday evening as the Furman volleyball team came back from two sets down to defeat the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 3-2 (23-25, 15-25, 25-20, 27-25, 15-4) in Southern Conference action at Brooks Gym.

Michelle Young in her 24-year career, improves it to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in SoCon play. East Tennessee State drops to 0-13 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Mary Beth Headley,
Izzy Castelloe, and
Ella Abraham all totaled double-doubles to lead the Paladins. Headley turned in her third double-double of the season after tying
Lauren Haynes with a match high 15 kills while finishing with 10 digs. Castelloe picked up her first career double-double on career highs of 10 kills, on .429 hitting, and 10 blocks. Abraham also registered her third double-double this year with 40 assists and 11 digs. Defensively,
Kennedy Seekford tied her career high of 32 digs.
Brianna Cantrell paced the Buccaneers offensively with 13 kills while Lundyn Coffman and Amanda Lowe contributed 12 and 11, respectively. Malgorzata Andersohn tallied a double-double of 40 assists and 13 digs. Jasmal Cruz had a team best 23 digs.
East Tennessee State jumped out a 2-0 lead after capturing the first set 25-23 and followed with a 25-15 triumph in set two. Furman fought back to capture the match with a 25-20 victory in the third set, 27-25 in the fourth, and 15-4 in the fifth.
The Paladins compiled a .444 hitting percentage in the fifth, and final, set after recording eight kills on no errors. The Buccaneers were limited to -.095 hitting as a team in the final frame as Furman scored the first six points and nine of the initial 10, leading 9-1 when Castelloe and Headley combined for a block. Headley and
Grainne McGrath registered the final three points with McGrath's kill giving the Paladins the 15-4 win and securing the 3-2 match victory.
The third set featured 12 ties and seven lead changes with Furman closing out the frame on an 8-2 run. The Paladins trailed 18-17 late before reeling off seven straight points behind the serving of Seekford.
East Tennessee State was held to just .022 hitting in the fourth set while Headley and Haynes combined for eight kills. The final 10 points saw the score even four times before, tied at 25-25, Haynes and Abraham recorded back-to-back kills for the 27-25 win.
Furman concluded the match hitting .141 overall and totaled a season high 17 blocks, which are the most since finishing with 16 in a win at Chattanooga on February 21, 2021.
The Paladins continue their three-match road trip to start the league schedule on Thursday, September 28 traveling to Spartanburg, S.C. for a 6 p.m. match at Wofford.
