Women's Soccer Settles For 1-1 Draw Versus The Citadel

Shania Diaz Nets Her First Goal Of 2023

Greenville, S.C. – Furman women's soccer remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 1-1 draw versus The Citadel Thursday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

The Paladins (5-3-3, 1-0-2 SoCon) grabbed the lead in the 29th minute on Shania Diaz's first goal of the season. Furman drew a foul less than a yard outside the top of the box and Diaz curled her free kick over the wall and under the cross bar to give the Paladins the 1-0 lead at the 28:04 mark.

The Citadel (3-3-5, 0-2-1 SoCon) had few scoring chances on the night but managed to draw level in the 52nd minute on Amber Fairfax's first tally of the campaign. Ariana Paez played her corner kick towards the near post and Fairfax redirected the ball across the line at 51:55 despite the effort of the Paladin defense to clear the ball.

"It was a great free kick by Shania, but we were disappointed not to hold onto the lead," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We will continue to work on improving as a team and begin our preparations for Sunday."

Furman finished with a 13-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 margin in shots on goal. Addison Corn recorded two saves for Furman while former Paladin Nora Sampson stopped five shots in goal for the Bulldogs.

Furman travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., for an 11 a.m. contest versus the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday.
