Furman Falls in Three Sets at Wofford

Paladins Host Samford on Saturday Afternoon

Spartanburg, S.C. – Furman's six-match winning streak came to an end Thursday evening as the Paladins dropped a 3-0 (20-25, 25-27, 17-25) decision to the Wofford Terriers in Southern Conference volleyball action inside Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Furman falls to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon. With the win, Wofford improves to 12-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Lauren Haynes provided a team high eight kills for the Paladins while Izzy Castelloe turned in six. Mary Beth Headley and Lindsay Walch both had five kills. Ella Abraham dished out 21 assists. Defensively, Headley and Kennedy Seekford both led the team with 12 digs and Haynes contributed 11.

Sarah Barham and Sarah MacLean paced the Terriers offensively with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Taylor Pecht posted a double-double of 20 assists and 11 digs, and Emily Hodsdon dished out 23 assists. Abbey Richman led all players with a match high 23 digs.

Haynes gave Furman an early 8-7 lead in the first set before Wofford answered by outscoring the Paladins 11-6 to go ahead 18-14. Furman came back with three straight points to trail 18-17, leading to a Terrier timeout. Following the timeout, Wofford outscored the Paladins 7-3 to claim the 25-20 victory.

The second set featured a total of 10 ties as Furman held a 19-15 advantage midway through the frame on Headley's service ace. After calling a timeout, the Terriers scored four consecutive points to even the score. The Paladins were at set point twice in the later stages when, with the score tied at 25-25, Wofford picked up the last two points to win 27-25.

Furman trailed 14-11 early in the third set before going on a 5-2 run to even the score at 16-16 after Haynes connected on a kill. Several plays later, Walch trimmed the Paladins' deficit to 18-17 with her kill. The Terriers closed out the set scoring the final seven points for the 25-17 triumph and 3-0 match victory.

Furman concluded the match hitting .112 as a team.

The Paladins return to Alley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon when they host Samford at 4 p.m. Fans can follow the action on www.furmanpaladins.com via live stats.
