GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Jayde Gamble scored 13 points and UNCG used strong rebounding and defense to defeat Furman, 70-55, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Fleming Gym.
The Spartans (13-4, 2-0 SoCon) entered the game as the SoCon's top defensive team and played up to it in claiming their fourth consecutive victory. Â The loss halted a four-game winning streak by the Paladins (11-7, 1-1 SoCon), whose early season road swing continues next Saturday at Wofford.
UNCG's defense forced 20 Furman turnovers, converting the miscues into a 20-10 scoring differential. The Spartans also claimed a 34-30 edge in rebounding in a contest featuring the league's top two rebounding squads, which Furman led with a +12.7 margin entering the contest.
After Furman took a 16-15 first quarter lead, UNCG responded with an 18-11 edge in the second period to take a 33-27 halftime lead.
The Spartans quickly pushed the advantage into double digits in the second half with an Isys Grady jumper and Nia Howard 3-pointer for a 38-27 advantage.
Jada Session pulled Furman to within 44-38 on a layup with 3:51 to go in the quarter, but that's as close as the Paladins could get.
Kate Johnson paced Furman with 19 points and eight rebounds but managed only four points and one carom in the second half.
Session finished with 13 points, and
Tate Walters had 10 points and game high five assists.
Grady and Howard followed Gamble with 12 points apiece for UNCG, which shot 45.2 percent from the field (28x62).
Furman connected on 20-of-27 shots (42.6%) and just 2-of-11 3-point attempts.
