Johnson's Career High Double-Double Powers Furman Past Converse, 93-40

Paladin Junior Registers 22 Points, 15 Rebounds In Victory

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Kate Johnson delivered career highs with 22 points and 15 rebounds to propel Furman to a 93-40 win over Converse in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

The win was the third straight for Furman (10-6) in the final non-conference outing of the 2023-24 regular season.  The Paladins tip off Southern Conference play at Western Carolina on Thursday.

Johnson, a junior forward from Acworth, Ga., delivered a dominant performance, connecting on 11-of-15 shots in 25 minutes of action to top her previous career standard of 16 points recorded against Coastal Carolina earlier this season.  Johnson's 15 caroms bettered the 11 she notched in against Erskine a year ago.

Johnson's double-double, her second of the season, headlined three double-doubles by the Paladins.  She was joined by Sydney Ryan, who tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Tate Walters, who poured in 19 points to go along with 10 assists.

Niveya Henley rounded out the double-digit scoring parade with 13 points.

After building a 28-21 first quarter lead, Furman turned up the defensive pressure on Converse, limiting the Valkyries to just five second quarter points to take a 41-26 lead into intermission.

The Paladins blew the game open in the third quarter by connecting on 12-of-17 shots (.706), highlighted by 5-for-5 work from 3-point range.  Henley led the charge from range, draining all three chances in the quarter, and Walters bottomed out both of her trey oppportunities to key the Paladins' 33-point period.

Furman, which entered the game ranked 14th nationally in rebounding with a +11.9 margin, improved on that figure by registering a 49-23 advantage on the glass.

The Paladins finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the field (33x67) and 57.1 percent from 3-point range (12x21) — their second best work of the season from beyond the arc.

Elisa Sole Sanchez led Converse with 12 points.
