Furman Falls In Four Sets At Samford

Parker Leads Paladins With 13 Kills

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Four different Bulldogs recorded double-doubles on Friday evening to lead Samford to a 3-1 (21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 13-25) Southern Conference victory over the Furman volleyball team at the Pete Hanna Center.

Furman drops to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-5 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.

Chandler Parker paced the Paladin offense with 13 kills on .357 hitting while Ava Augustson, Genevieve Perry, and Brooke Scheffler each registered nine. Scheffler tied her career high of 14 digs. Quinn Morrissey (18), Emily Navarro (12), and Eva Wheeler (10) combined for 40 assists. Defensively, Kennedy Seekford totaled 21 digs.

Gracie Lynn Butler, Ally Cordes, Kaleigh Meritt, and Lexi Thatcher all posted double-doubles for Samford. Meritt tied Parker with a match high 13 kills and had a team best 18 digs. Thatcher dished out 40 assists. Kate Wonus compiled seven assisted blocks.

Furman outhit the Bulldogs .221 to .211 on Friday but had 13 service errors and Samford added 10 service aces leading to the four-set win.

The Paladins compiled a .342 hitting percentage in the opening set with Augustson and Perry combining for nine of the team's 16 kills. Grainne McGrath tied the score at 17-17 midway before the Bulldogs ended the frame on an 8-4 run to claim the 25-21 triumph.

Furman limited Samford to just .122 hitting throughout the second set with six different players collecting a kill led by Scheffler's four on .500 hitting. Izzy Castelloe gave the Paladins a 12-9 lead before the Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to go in front, 15-13. Samford would lead 21-17 in the later stages until Furman evened the score at 23-23 after a Bulldog attack error. Samford recorded the final two points to win, 25-23.

The third set featured eight ties and five lead changes as Parker finished with five kills while the Paladins had a .265 hitting percentage. A Bulldog attack error midway put Furman ahead 16-14 and Scheffler later gave it an 18-16 lead following her kill. The teams traded the next 12 points before Parker and Augustson connected on back-to-back kills as the Paladins picked up the 25-23 victory.

Samford began the fourth set on a 9-1 run that included seven straight points. Furman got as close as seven points after that with the last coming at 19-12 on Castelloe's kill. The Bulldogs closed out the set, and match, scoring six of the final seven points.
