First Half Scoring Outburst Propels Furman Past Wofford, 4-0

Paladins Host League-Leading Western Carolina Thursday Night

Greenville, S.C. – Furman scored three goals in the opening 36 minutes and cruised to a 4-0 victory over Wofford in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

The Paladins (8-5-3 overall, 4-1-2 SoCon) opened the scoring just 2:38 into the match when Shania Diaz lofted a cross from the left wing to a charging Tara Katz who headed into the right side of the net from the top of the six-yard box to give Furman a 1-0 lead. In the 23rd minute, Ellie Herrmann sent a long free kick towards the far-left side of the box that Katie Bengough headed across the face of goal for fifth-year senior Nieva Gaither to tap in to double the advantage.

Sophomore Norah Roller capped the first half outburst at the 36-minute mark by running onto a failed clearance by the Terriers and burying her first touch into the right side of the net to put the Paladins in front 3-0 at intermission.

Senior Ashlyn Goila upped the margin to 4-0 in the 71st minute by rushing down the right side, rounding her defender, and sending a shot across goal and off the left post for her third goal of the season.

"It was great to bounce back with a victory and have four different goal scorers today," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We were able to play a lot of players today and get the result we needed to stay in the SoCon race."

The Paladins compiled an 18-10 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Reese DeJong stopped five shots to earn the victory on goal while LJ Wise saw her first action of the season between the pipes for the Paladins. Elizabeth Navola recorded four saves for Wofford (5-10-2, 1-6-1 SoCon).

Furman concludes its regular season home schedule on Thursday night when it plays host to the SoCon-leading Western Carolina Catamounts. Kickoff at Stone Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
