Charleston, S.C. – Tara Katz scored a pair of goals and Furman withstood a second-half rally by The Citadel to down the Bulldogs, 4-2, in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, S.C.
With the victory, Furman concluded the regular season at 9-6-3 overall and 5-2-2 in league play. The Paladins earned the No. 3 seed in the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship and will take on the sixth-seeded ETSU Bucs in quarterfinal round play on Friday, November 1, at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
Sophomore
Maddie Massie opened the scoring for the Paladins in the 16
th minute.
Ava King played a long cross into the box from the left wing and Massie lofted a header over the goalkeeper and into the left side of the net at 15:17 for her third score of the year.
Katz doubled the Furman advantage in the 23
rd minute with her first of two goals on the afternoon. The graduate student made a long run through the midfielder before connecting on a give-and-go with
Jenny Jacobson. Katz ripped a shot from more than 20 yards out into the right side of the goal at 22:06.
After Furman lead 2-0 at the break, Katz added to the lead with her team-best sixth goal of the season less than 12 minutes after the restart. The Montgomery, Ala., product was tripped from behind in the box and converted her spot-kick at the 56:29 mark.
The Citadel mounted a rally when Elisa Fuentes converted from the penalty spot in the 70
th minute and Maggie Melogy drilled an 18-yard strike across the goal and into the right-hand corner less than two minutes later. Center back
Katie Bengough squashed the Bulldog rally at 86:26 by burying her free kick from 35 yards out into the upper left-hand corner to seal the 4-2 win for the Paladins.
Furman outshot The Citadel 14-6, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Freshman
Reese DeJong notched one save to secure the victory while Zoe Santos stopped five shots in a losing effort for The Citadel.
