Furman Falls At East Carolina, 67-51

Walters, Johnson Lead Paladins With 14 Points

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Jayla Hearp scored 14 points and East Carolina used a quick start to take control en route to a 67-51 win over Furman in women's basketball action Thursday evening in Williams Arena at Minges.

Hearp scored eight of her 14 points in the first quarter to help the Pirates (2-1) grab a 22-7 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Paladins (2-2) answered with an 11-0 run to begin the second period to slice East Carolina's lead to 22-18 following a Tate Walters layup, but ECU blunted the run by scoring the final six points of the half to take a 34-22 advantage into the break.

Hearp connected on 5-of-11 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers, and a free throw for her game high 14 points.  Khia Miller followed with 10 points for the Pirates, who dialed in 8-of-17 3-pointers in the contest.

Walters and Kate Johnson paced Furman with 14 points apiece, but the Paladins were hurt by 24 turnovers.

Walters added six assists to up her career total to 349, moving her up to seventh on Furman's all-time  chart.

Paladin freshman Clare Coyle continued her solid early season work with a game high 13 rebounds — her fourth straight contest in leading Furman on the boards.

Furman returns home to face USC Upstate next Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. contest at North Greenville University's Hayes Gymnasium, which will serve as the Paladins' home court for 10 games this season while Timmons Arena, the university's arena, undergoes a $40M renovation.
