GREENVILLE, S.C. – Tennyson Gorman had a team high 15 kills, while four different players had double-doubles, as the Furman volleyball team picked up its fifth victory in six matches with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 27-25) triumph over The Citadel Bulldogs, Friday evening at Alley Gymnasium.
Furman snaps a seven-match losing streak to The Citadel while improving to 13-12 overall and 7-7 in the SoCon. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 14-12 on the season and 8-7 in conference play.
Gorman recorded seven of her 15 kills in the fourth set and concluded the match hitting .737 overall.
Ava Augustson (12 kills, 16 digs),
Emily Navarro (21 assists, 16 digs),
Quinn Morrissey (24 assists, 15 digs), and
Kennedy Seekford (12 assists, 23 digs) all registered double-doubles for the Paladins.
Ashley Stein contributed 11 kills and
Chandler Parker 10.
Brooke Scheffler posted 10 digs while
Izzy Castelloe added nine kills and six blocks.
Ali Ruffin led four players in double figure kills with 15 for The Citadel and recorded a double-double of 13 digs. Belle Hogan dished out 53 assists to go with 13 digs. Mackenzie Martin added a double-double of 12 kills and 30 digs.
The Paladins compiled a .269 hitting percentage in the first set and picked up a 25-21 victory. Parker led the team with five kills and Morrissey dished out seven assists. Three different players posted six digs apiece in Augustson, Navarro, and Seekford. Furman trailed 15-12 midway before scoring six consecutive points and later took a 22-18 lead after back-to-back kills from Augustson. The Bulldogs cut the lead down to two before the Paladins scored three of the final four points.
Furman extended its lead following a 25-22 win in the second set. The Paladins had a .417 hitting mark in the frame with six different players tallying a kill. Morrissey totaled six assists and Navarro five digs. Furman outscored The Citadel 11-6 in the early stages and took its largest lead of the set, 17-12, on a service error. The Bulldogs rallied back to within one point four times before the Paladins ended the set scoring four of the last six points, capped by Castelloe's clinching kill.
Furman sat at match point in the third set before The Citadel recorded three consecutive points to win, 26-24. Stein had six kills to pace the Paladin offense with Navarro contributing seven assists and Seekford six digs.
Furman held off another Bulldog rally late in the fourth set to clinch the match with a 27-25 triumph. Gorman hit .667 in the set to go with her seven kills. Morrissey registered six assists and Seekford seven digs. For the second straight set, the Paladins sat at set point leading 24-22 before The Citadel evened the score at 25-25. Furman clinched the set, and match, with a kill from Castelloe and a Bulldog attack error.
The Paladins concluded the match hitting .222 overall and led 58-57 in assists and 95-93 in digs.
Furman closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon when it hosts Wofford on Senior Day at 4 p.m. The Paladins will hold their Senior Day ceremony prior to first serve honoring Augustson, Parker,
Lily Barnhill,
Mary Beth Headley, and
Genevieve Perry.
