GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sarah MacLean and Bri Mahoney combined for 33 kills to lead the Wofford Terriers to a 3-1 (19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25) victory over the Furman volleyball team Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at Alley Gymnasium.
Furman ends the regular season with a 13-13 overall record and 7-8 mark in the SoCon. With the win, Wofford improves to 20-8 on the season and 12-4 in conference play.
Playing in their final home matches,
Ava Augustson and
Chandler Parker led the Paladins offensively. Augustson registered her seventh double-double of the season with 15 kills and 17 digs. Parker hit .361 and posted 14 kills.
Quinn Morrissey dished out 26 assists to go with eight digs while
Emily Navarro contributed 17 assists and eight digs. Defensively,
Kennedy Seekford totaled 21 digs and
Brooke Scheffler 10.
MacLean finished with 17 kills to lead all players and Mahoney tallied a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs. Taylor Pecht also registered a double-double on 28 assists and 10 digs. Laney Klika had a match high 24 digs.
The Terriers jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Furman after taking the first two sets by identical 25-19 scores. Augustson led the Paladins with six kills and five digs in the opening set and Morrissey dished out six assists. Parker had five kills and then tied Augustson with three kills in the second set. Morrissey collected five assists during the second frame and Seekford compiled five digs.
Furman responded by winning the third set and trimmed Wofford's lead following a 25-23 triumph.
Tennyson Gorman led the Paladins with four kills while Parker,
Grainne McGrath, and
Ashley Stein each recorded three. Morrissey had eight assists and Augustson seven digs. The set featured eight ties capped when Parker's kill evened the score at 10-10. The Paladins then went on a 10-4 run to take their largest lead at 20-14 when Gorman connected on a kill. The Terriers cut the lead down to 22-21 late before Stein captured the set with her kill.
Wofford clinched the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set. Augustson had a team high five kills while Morrissey and Navarro combined for 13 assists. Seekford added six digs.
Furman concluded the match hitting .135 as a team.
The 2024 SoCon Volleyball Championship is slated for November 22-24 at Wofford's Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
