Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's soccer team will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, November 21, it was announced Monday afternoon on the NCAA Selection Show.
The Paladins (9-3-5) and Tar Heels (9-4-4) are scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m. at Dorrance Field. The winner of Thursday's match will advance to face No. 11 seed Marshall in second round play on Sunday, November 24, in Huntington, W.Va.
"I'm so happy for our guys and especially our seniors," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison, following the NCAA Selection Show. "This is a great experience for our entire team and Furman family. We've had such great leadership from our captains. I'm just proud of our players and coaching staff and want them to enjoy the experience."
Furman secured an automatic bid in the 48-team field with a 2-0 victory over ETSU in the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship Final on Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tenn.
Christian Kraus netted the go-ahead goal in the fourth minute and
Caleb Johnson added an insurance goal in the 70
th minute. Goalkeeper
Aaron Salinas, the tournament's most outstanding player, stopped three shots to register his fifth shutout of the season.
The SoCon championship marked the 15
th for Furman and first since 2018. The Paladins are making their 12
th NCAA Tournament appearance. Furman advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1999 and reached the round of 16 in 2002.
