CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Ashley Stein hit .458 and recorded her third double-double of the season to lead the Furman volleyball team to a sweep of Chattanooga, 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-17), Saturday in Southern Conference action at Maclellan Gym in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Paladins improve to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in league play, while Chattanooga drops to 14-12 overall and 4-7 versus SoCon opponents.
Stein, a freshman from Easley, S.C., led the Paladins with 14 kills and registered 10 digs in the victory. Senior Ava Augustson also notched her third double-double of the year, posting ten kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Izzy Castelloe tallied 11 kills for Furman. Sophomore Kennedy Seekford recorded 12 digs, while freshman Tennyson Gorman led the Paladins with four block assists and one solo block. Freshman Quinn Morrissey dished out 24 assists, and sophomore Emily Navarro had 16 assists.
Breanah Rives scored 13 kills to lead the Mocs, and Elaine Redman posted 29 assists.
The Paladins built a quick 13-4 lead in set one before the Mocs rallied to come within five at 18-13. Kills from Castelloe and Stein, coupled with a Chattanooga attack error, helped the Paladins regain the momentum and take a 25-16 victory in the first set.
Chattanooga came out hot for set two, building a 7-3 lead, but Furman reeled off six straight points, fueled by two kills from Augustson, to lead, 9-7. The match was tied at 14-all before consecutive kills from Stein, followed by a kill from Parker, gave the Paladins a 17-14 lead, and Furman maintained the three-point advantage until the Mocs scored three-straight to tie the set at 21-apiece. Chattanooga had match point at 24-22, but a kill from Parker kept the match alive. The Paladins scored the last four points of the set, including a service ace from Augustson at 24-all, to win set two, 26-24, and take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The teams were tied at 7-7 in set three before Furman put together an 11-4 to break open the set, 18-11. Stein hit .545 with seven kills and five digs to help lead the Paladins to the 25-17 victory.
The Paladins hit over .300 for the fourth time this season, posting a .324 attack percentage while holding Chattanooga to a .190 hitting percentage. Furman led the match 49-38 in kills, 45-34 in assists, 6-2 in service aces, and 45-39 in digs.
Furman returns to Alley Gymnasium to open a five-match homestand on Thursday versus Mercer. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
