ATLANTA, GA. --
Sydney Ryan poured in 24 points and claimed 12 rebounds to power Furman to a 85-74 victory over host Georgia State in the Panthers' Thanksgiving Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at GSU's Convocation Center.
Ryan, who tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds against Campbell in Tuesday tournament first round action, recorded her second double-double of the season. Â The junior from Nashville, Tenn., connected on 8-of-16 field goal attempts and headlined a sizzling Paladin 3-point shooting performance by draining 5-of-9 treys. Â For the game Furman (5-3) drained a season best 13-of-26 shots from beyond the arc.
Ryan was followed in the scoring column by graduate guard
Tate Walters, from nearby Buford, Ga., with 16 points, and
Niveya Henley, a junior, added 15 points. Â Senior forward
Kate Johnson, who played her prep ball in the Atlanta suburb of Canton, rounded out the Paladins' double figure scoring effort with 10 points, which she combined with eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Paladins trailed 33-31 midway through the second quarter when Walters nailed the first of three consecutive 3-pointers by the Paladins, who went up 40-36 following a triple from Ryan with 4:03 remaining. Â After Georgia State cut Furman's lead to 40-39, the Paladins finished off the half with a 7-0 run, capped by a Walters 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining to take a 47-39 lead into the halftime locker room.
Furman maintained its momentum to start the second half with a Walters 3-pointer to extend its advantage to 50-39.
Georgia State sliced Furman's lead to 60-58 on a layup by Eden Johnson with just under a minute to play in the third quarter, but the Paladins quickly answered on the ensuing possession when freshman guard Walters fed
Raina McGowens for a short jump shot, and Claire Coyle, another Paladin freshman, made it 64-58 by converting a fast break layup.
The Paladins took control in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run featuring 3-pointers from Ryan and Henley, and Johnson layup for a 72-60 advantage with 7:37 to go.
Furman dominated Georgia State in rebounding, posting a 48-24 edge on the glass, including a 16-4 advantage on the offensive boards. The Paladins, who were credited with 20 assists on their 28 field goals, finished the contest shooting 45.2 percent from the field (28x62).
Furman wraps up its three-game appearance in Atlanta with a 2:30 clash versus Purdue Fort Wayne.
