Furman Cross Country Teams Ranked 22nd

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Both the Furman women's cross country team and the men's cross country team are ranked 22nd nationally and fourth in the NCAA Southeast Region, according to the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings.

Both Paladin teams claimed their 12th-straight Southern Conference titles Saturday in Greenville, S.C.  The Furman men scored a perfect 15 points to claim the title, a streak which leads the league on the men's side, while the Furman women, who scored recorded 19 points for their victory, lead the nation with the longest streak of women's titles.

The Paladins captured both individual titles, with senior Dylan Schubert and junior Carly Wilkes winning the men's 8K race and women's 5K race, respectively, and establishing new course records in each event.  Schubert's win, his third-consecutive individual SoCon title, marked the ninth-straight individual title for the Paladins on the men's side.

Furman's Rita Gary was voted the SoCon Women's Coach of the Year, marking the 12th-straight year the Paladins have won the award, while Robert Gary received the award on the men's side for the 11th time.

Prior to Saturday's SoCon meet, the Paladin men took down eight ranked teams, including No. 13 Washington, 14th-ranked Michigan, and No. 15 Eastern Kentucky, at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis.  No. 3 Arkansas won the race with 89 points, and Furman scored 418 points for 13th place.  Senior Carson paced the Paladins with a time of 23:07.8 to take 13th on the 8K course.

On the women's side, Furman scored 420 points for 14th place in the loaded field.  No. 2 BYU won the title with 105 points, and Wilkes led Furman in the 6K race, posting a time of 19:56.7 to take 22nd place.

Earlier in the season, the Paladin women defeated ten ranked teams, including fourth-ranked Oregon and No. 13 Lipscomb, on September 27 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.  Fifth-ranked Washington won the race with 110 points, and Furman was sixth at 209 points.  Wilkes led the Paladins with a time of 20:18.4 to finish ninth on the 6K course. On the men's side, Furman scored 455 points for 21st place in the loaded field.  No. 2 BYU won the title with 44 points, and Williams paced Furman with a time of 24:06.1, finishing 39th in the 8K race.

Both Paladin teams captured the team titles at the Furman Invitational on September 14.  Senior Kaylie Armitage led the Furman women with a second-place finish and a time of 20:29.9 on the 6K course, while Williams took the men's individual title with a time of 17:52.2.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

The Paladins will compete at the NCAA Southeast Region Championship on November 15 in Rock Hill, S.C.
