TIGERVILLE, S.C. --
Niveya Henley matched a career high with 24 points to pace Furman to a 100-31, season opening victory over Erskine at Hayes Gymnasium on the campus of North Greenville University on Thursday evening.
Henley, a redshirt junior guard, scored 11 of Furman's 24 third quarter points and 16 in the second half on the way to tying her career high scoring performance first posted against UNC Greensboro last season. Â The Seattle, Wash., product connected on 10-of-20 shots from the field, including 3-of-6 pointers, and a free throw in 23 minutes of action.
She was joined in double figures by four teammates, with
Tate Walters and
Sydney Ryan contributing 13 points apiece,
Raina McGowens 11, and
Kate Johnson with 10 points.
Clare Coyle followed up an eight rebound performance in her career debut against South Carolina State, a 60-54 win on Monday, with a game high 12 boards. Â
Bella LaChance, meanwhile, contributed a game high eight assists while
Chantelle Stuart added seven dishes.
Furman (2-0) led 23-13 after one quarter and took total command in the second period by reeling 19 consecutive points while holding Erskine scoreless over the first 8:26 of the frame to go up 42-13 following a free throw by
Hilary Englert.
Henley spiced a 24-point Paladin third quarter with 5-of-8 shooting from the field that gave Furman a 71-26 advantage.
The Paladins finished the contest shooting 51.4 percent from the field (38x74) and found the mark on 8-of-20 treys. Furman took advantage of 33 Erskine turnovers for a 44-6 scoring tally off miscues and outscored the Flying Fleet 54-16 in the paint.
Erskine made just 1-of-19 shots from beyond the arc.
Furman, which faces Georgia in Athens on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game, is scheduled to play 10 of its 12 home games this season at nearby North Greenville University while its on-campus home, Timmons Arena, undergoes a $40 million renovation.Â
