The Paladins continued their early season surge on Sunday with a 58-52 win over Charleston Southern at North Greenville University's Hayes Gymnasium, which is serving as Furman's primary home court this season while Timmons Arena, the university's on-campus facility, undergoes a $40M renovation.
A 14-2, late third quarter run by the Paladins, sparked by eight points from graduate guard
Tate Walters, keyed the win over CSU. Walters stroked a pair of 3-pointers and collected three of her game high five steals in the spurt, which erased a 29-24 deficit. She finished with a game high 17 points, followed by
Niveya Henley with 14.
Furman's strong second half against Charleston Southern also featured excellent defense, which limited the Buccaneers to just 28.6 percent shooting (8x28) over the final 20 minutes. Furman also continued its dominant rebounding, using a 25-11 edge in the second half to finish with a 44-30 game differential On the season the Paladins own a +10.8 rebounding margin, which tops the Southern Conference and ranks 19th nationally.
The Paladins boast a balanced attack this year with four players averaging in double figure points, led by
Tate Walters (13.5 ppg) and including senior forward
Kate Johnson (13.3 ppg), junior forward
Sydney Ryan (12.5 ppg), and junior guard
Niveya Henley (11.6 ppg).
Walters became the 27th player in Furman history to reach 1,000 career points in the Paladins' win over Elon last week.
Johnson tops the SoCon and ranks 19th nationally in field goal percentage (.593), and her 8.1 rpg average stands third in the SoCon.
Three freshmen — guard
Raina McGowens (6.1 ppg), forward
Clare Coyle (5.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg), and guard
Chantelle Stuart (3.9 ppg, 30 ast.) — continue to command significant playing time for the Paladins, who also welcomed back senior All-SoCon forward
Jada Session from injury on Sunday against Charleston Southern. Last year Session paced Furman in both scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg).
Furman posted a 66-61 win over UNC Asheville a year ago in Greenville behind
Tate Walters' 21-point performance. The Paladins own a seven-game winning streak against the Bulldogs and lead the all-time series, 21-14. Two years ago Furman clipped UNCA at Kimmel Arena, 65-64.
