Greenville, S.C. – Furman's
Luke Hutzell,
Wilfer Bustamante, and
Gabe Cox each earned a spot among the
Top Drawer Soccer Postseason Top 100 Freshmen, it was announced earlier this week at TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Hutzell, a native of Dacula, Ga., started all 19 matches in the Paladin midfield en route to earning second team All-Southern Conference honors, SoCon All-Freshman accolades, and the No. 59 spot on the TDS Top 100 Freshmen list. He netted his lone goal, a match-tying score, in the final seconds of Furman's SoCon semifinal contest at UNCG to help the Paladins advance to the finals. Hutzell finished his first season at Furman with one goal and four assists.
Bustamante, a Greenville, S.C., native and product of J.L. Mann High School, garnered the No. 76 spot in the top 100 after scoring five goals, including three match-winning scores, and adding two assists as a freshman. The forward, who joined Hutzell on the All-SoCon Second Team and SoCon All-Freshman Team, netted a pair of goals in a win at nationally-ranked College of Charleston and assisted on
Christian Kraus' match-winning tally versus ETSU in the SoCon finals.
Cox started in all 19 matches for the Paladins as a freshman and earned the No. 87 spot in the TDS Top 100 Freshmen. The Richmond, Va., native, who saw most of his time in the Paladin midfielder, netted his first collegiate goal in Furman's victory over North Greenville.
The 2024 Paladins finished 9-4-6 on the season, claimed the SoCon Tournament crown ,and advanced past 14
th-ranked North Carolina in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by eventual national runner-up and eighth-ranked Marshall in the second round.
