Furman Drops 18-12 Home Decision To East Carolina

Shaw Leads Paladins With Season High Five Goals

Greenville, S.C. – Erin Gulden had a game high seven points to guide the East Carolina Pirates to an 18-12 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Paladin Stadium.

Furman falls to 1-3 on the season while East Carolina improves to 3-1 overall.

Gulden and Frances Kimel combined for 13 points to pace the Pirate offense. Gulden provided four goals and three assists while Kim tallied three goals and three assists. Kayla Wilkes and Ellie Bromley both added three goals. Goalie Brynn Knight registered seven saves.

Sophie Shaw scored a season high five goals to lead the Paladins and finished with six points after dishing out an assist. Anna Roser contributed four points on two goals and two assists, and Casey Richbourg totaled three points with two goals and an assist. Sophia Buzelis recorded four draws to go with three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one goal. Hannah Dintino won a team best five draws. In goal, Sailor Henderson and Lily Rathbun combined for seven saves.

East Carolina used an 8-2 scoring effort in the second quarter to break open a 3-3 tie to lead 11-4 at halftime. Furman scored twice over the final 1:13 of the first quarter from Roser and Shaw to even the score at 3-3. The Pirates answered with two goals during the opening minute of the second period and had four straight to extend their lead to 7-3 at the 9:34 mark. East Carolina had eight of the initial nine goals in the second and took an 11-4 advantage when Wilkes scored with 17 seconds remaining before intermission.

The Paladins recorded four of the first seven goals in the third quarter and cut their deficit to 14-9 with 5:51 to go on Shaw's fourth goal of the contest. The Pirates then scored back-to-back goals to push their lead back to seven, 16-9, with just over seven minutes left in the contest.

Audrey Smith scored her first goal of the season with 3:45 remaining to make the score 17-12. Wilkes answered just over a minute later to secure East Carolina's six-goal triumph.

Furman forced the Pirates into 12 turnovers, extending its streak of 12 consecutive games dating back to last season. The Paladins finished the game with 15 draws and 10 ground balls.

Furman is back in action next Saturday, March 2, hosting 3rd-ranked James Madison at 11 a.m.
