Despite spending just two seasons on campus, Walker Zimmerman left an indelible mark on Furman University and its men's soccer program before becoming one of the most recognizable Paladins in professional sports.
Â
No member of the Furman University community knows Zimmerman better than head men's soccer coach
Doug Allison.
Â
"Walker Zimmerman is one of those rare, extraordinary people who you feel fortunate to come across, and glad was on earth in your lifetime," said Allison, who has served as Furman's head coach since 1995. "He just gets it! Walker is impressive in every sense of the word and yet, he is one of the most humble, generous, and service oriented individuals I have ever been around. I hope you get the chance to meet him.
Â
"I first met Walker in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as one of his coaches on the Region 3 Olympic Development soccer team. He was a tall, lanky 15-year-old who could play many defensive positions extremely well, but from that moment on he tried to convince me that he was a better forward than a defender and his talents could be better utilized to score goals rather than prevent them!
Â
"A few details became apparent while I was recruiting Walker to Furman University: first of all, this kid was pretty impressive. He was special in the way he carried and marketed himself as a student-athlete. He sent me pictures and folders detailing his academic path and his soccer journey from high school to the professional ranks representing his country at every level with the pinnacle being the World Cup. Lofty goals indeed from a 15-year-old! Walker was also a born leader and devoted to his faith. I also discovered that his dad (Mr. Z.) was an incredible, frequent crier!
Â
"We signed Walker over schools such as Clemson, Duke, UNC, South Carolina, Wake Forest, and many other powerful suitors. I was fortunate to be able to work alongside such a tremendous student-athlete who taughtÂ
me life lessons every day! I will never forget the road trip that Walker and I took to his former club in Georgia to conduct a clinic with his former club coach, Nuno Piteira. We had plenty of windshield time on our journey that day after class and training at Furman and, amongst many of the various topics, he educated me on how and why faith was so important in his career and life. I asked him a very tough question, 'Why was Gray Griffin, the 18-year-old captain of the USA National youth team and Furman freshman taken from us, and Earth, so soon? His reply I will never forget. He told me that God had a plan for us all, especially Gray, and needed him on His team in heaven!
Â
"Walker was a terrific talent and leader on Furman's campus. He was an All-American and SoCon Freshman of the Year, but that was not as important as the fact that he met his wonderful wife, Sally, at Furman, starting their family's journey which now includes their son Tucker, and the newest Zimmerman, their daughter, Belle. In April 2022, Walker and Sally started the Walker Zimmerman Scholarship Endowment to help future, aspiring student-athletes get their education at Furman.Â
Â
"Drafted in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas, Walker has been voted MLS Defender of the Year twice, voted into the MLS All-Star game four years in a row, and selected to the MLS Best XI for five consecutive seasons. He has had several fantastic hairstyles that have even likened him to the Marvel character, Thor (ask him about his Bobble Head!). Last winter he realized his dream of starting for the full USA National team in the World Cup in Qatar. Note that all this was as a defender, not a forward!
Â
"I sincerely do hope you get to meet Walker Zimmerman, or someone else in your life that means as much to you as he does to me. Walker, congratulations on being a member of the 2024 class of the prestigious Furman Athletics Hall of Fame! I am proud to have been your coach.
