MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Furman sophomore Clark Akers (-6) tied for third and the Paladin men's golf team finished third ahead of key SoCon foes ETSU and Chattanooga Wednesday at the General Hackler Championship, which was hosted by Coastal Carolina at the par 72, 7, 233 yard The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. 

A native of Nashville, Tenn., Akers, who led the field with a 2.67 average on the par 3s, played as an individual and teed off on No. 10 in the tournament's final round.  He birdied three of four holes from No. 14 through No. 17 and led the field at the turn then finished with a 1-over 73.  He was one of three players to tie for third, two strokes behind medalist Max Kennedy (-8) of Louisville who won the tournament with a three-round total of 68-71-69=208.

Sophomore Harris Barth (-1) was one of two players to post six birdies for the Paladins on Wednesday.  He birdied three-straight holes from No. 11 through No. 13 and his team-low 68 was instrumental in Furman's rise up the leaderboard on the final day.  

Senior Ross Funderburke (+3) shot an even 72 with three birdies to tie for 20th, while senior Walker Crosby (+6) and junior Will Morlan (+6) each tied for 35th.  Morlan fired a 71 with six birdies, and Crosby added a 76 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 10.  Junior Trey Diehl (+10) carded a 74 with three birdies to tie for 54th.  

No. 48 Louisville (-5) won the tournament by five strokes over host Coastal Carolina (E).  Furman (+1) finished third, ahead of 15th-ranked East Tennessee State (+3) and No. 33 Chattanooga ( +3), who tied for fourth. 

Furman led the field with a 4.14 scoring average on the par 4s and tied for fourth with 47 birdies.  The Paladins also finished fourth with 161 pars.  

The Paladins will compete at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C., Sunday through Tuesday.
