GREENVILLE, S.C. – Four players finished with a double-double Friday evening as the UTRGV Vaqueros defeated the Furman volleyball team 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25) in the final day one match of the Furman Invite at Alley Gymnasium.
Furman drops to 0-2 on the season while UTRGV improves to 2-0 overall.
The Paladins saw two players reach double figure kills led by
Lindsay Walch's 13 on .306 hitting.
Chandler Parker provided a career high 12 kills after hitting .458 and
Genevieve Perry turned in nine. Making her first collegiate start,
Ashley Stein registered seven kills and 14 digs.
Emily Navarro added 27 assists and nine digs while
Eva Wheeler dished out 18 assists.
Kennedy Seekford finished with a match high 21 digs.
Claudia Lupescu, Nadine Zech, Ilana De Assis, and Isabella Costantini all picked up double-doubles for the Vaqueros. Zech led the team with 20 kills and 16 digs and Costantini had a match high 55 assists. Lupescu matched Zech with 16 digs.
Both teams hit over .300 in the opening set that featured 12 ties and five lead changes. Furman led by as many as four points, 14-10, midway on
Ava Augustson's service ace.
Izzy Castelloe gave the Paladins a 17-14 lead before the Vaqueros used an 8-2 run to go in front 22-19. Furman rallied to tie the score four times in the later stages and sat at set point, 26-25, following Castelloe's kill. UTRGV scored the final three points for the 28-26 win.
Walch collected four kills in the second set as the Paladins answered back with a 25-20 triumph to even the match at 1-1. The frame saw the score even 11 times with five more lead changes. Furman trailed 19-18 before scoring five consecutive points to lead 23-19 when Walch connected on a kill. A Vaquero attack error gave the Paladins the five-point victory.
Furman scored eight of the first 12 points in the third set and led 8-4 off Parker's kill. A UTRGV attack error several plays later put the Paladins back in front, 13-10, but the Vaqueros used an 11-5 run to go in front 21-18 late. Furman fought back to tie the score at 23-23 on Stein's service ace. UTRGV answered with the final two points for the 25-23 win.
The Paladins started the fourth set in similar fashion as the third, using a 9-5 run to lead by four on a Vaquero attack error. Furman led by three points twice midway with the last coming at 16-13 following a kill from Parker. The Paladins maintained their lead late when a service error put them ahead 21-19. UTRGV outscored Furman 6-1 after that to win 25-22 and secure the 3-1 match victory.
The Paladins concluded the match hitting .228 as a team with four players compiling a .300 mark or better. Furman also held a 9.0-7.0 advantage in blocks led by five from Parker.
The Paladins close out the Furman Invite on Saturday afternoon when they host Charlotte at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action on www.furmanpaladins.com via live stats.
