Furman Falls At Georgia Southern, 3-0

Paladins Host Presbyterian On Wednesday

STATESBORO, GA. – Jillian Gray recorded a double-double to lead the Georgia Southern Eagles to a 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 19-25) sweep of the Furman volleyball team on the final day of the Eagle Invitational at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Furman drops to 4-4 on the season while Georgia Southern improves to 7-1 overall.

Ashley Stein led the Paladins offensively with 11 kills, her third straight in double digits, on .310 hitting. Emily Navarro (14) and Quinn Morrissey (11) combined for 25 assists. Defensively, Kennedy Seekford and Brooke Scheffler both had 10 digs while Ava Augustson contributed nine. The 10 digs were a new career high for Scheffler.

Gray compiled 12 kills on .524 hitting and 12 digs to pace the Eagles. She was one of three players to finish with 10 or more kills along with Maggie Sale (11) and Reagan Barth (11). Kirsten Barrett dished out 39 assists and Ashlyn Lovett totaled a match high 17 digs.

Georgia Southern used a 12-7 run midway in the first set to break open a 22-15 lead over Furman. The Paladins rallied back to within three points to trail 24-21 when Augustson connected on a kill. The Eagles captured the set on the following play.

Stein tied the score early in the second set before Izzy Castelloe and Campbell Woods gave Furman an 8-7 lead with their combination block. Georgia Southern answered with a 12-5 run to go ahead 19-13 leading to a Paladin timeout. Furman would be limited to just four points out of the timeout with the Eagles clinching the 25-17 triumph off a Paladin attack error.

Georgia Southern opened the third set on a 10-4 run and built a 19-12 lead in the later stages. Furman would get as close as four points when an Eagle service error and back-to-back kills by Castelloe made the score 19-15. Georgia Southern closed out the match scoring six of the final 10 points for the 25-19 victory.

The Paladins concluded the match hitting .148 as a team and compiled six blocks.

Furman returns to Alley Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 18 to host Presbyterian at 6 p.m. Admission to all Paladin home matches this season is free of charge with first-come, first-serve seating.
