Bustamante, Kraus Power Furman Past No. 23 College Of Charleston, 4-2

Paladins Hand Cougars Their First Loss Of 2024

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Freshman Wilfer Bustamante netted two of Furman's season-high four goals and senior Christian Kraus added a goal and two assists as the Paladins knocked 23rd-ranked College of Charleston from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 4-2 victory Tuesday night on Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point Athletics Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

After the Paladins and Cougars combined for just three shots on goal in a scoreless opening half, College of Charleston (6-1-1) broke the deadlock at the 59:19 mark. Ezra White served a cross from the right edge of the box towards the far post and Adil Iggoute rose above the defense to head a shot into the lower left-hand corner.

Furman (3-2-2) hit the Cougars with a 1-2 punch in the 73rd minute. Caleb Johnson, from the right wing, lofted a pass to Kraus that the forward flicked past the Cougar goalkeeper and into the far side of the net to level the match at 72:01. Just 21 seconds later, Johnson sent a ball down the left side to Wesley Siegel and the freshman line a cross through the box to Bustamante who redirected the ball into the net to put the Paladins in front.

Charleston answered to even the contest at 2-2 in the 75th minute as Ezra White fed a ball to Leonardo D'Ambrosio who finished for the Cougars, but Furman responded with another two-goal spurt. With less than 12 minutes remaining, Luke Hutzell played a free kick into the right side of the box that Slade Starnes headed across the face of goal. Bustamante got on the end of the cross for the finish to give Furman back the lead.

Lloyd Wamu Snell put the match away in the 86th minute as Kraus held up a long ball over the top and Snell ripped a one-time from the top of the box into the right-hand corner.

Kraus, who leads Furman with three goals on the season, totaled a goal and two assists on the night while Johnson added two assists. Bustamante's brace marked his first collegiate goals.

"It's great to get a road win over an unbeaten, top 25 team who are very good," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "I'm really pleased with the character of our guys after we went a goal down to come back and take the lead. Then for them to tie the game and our team answer with the two goals at the end is a testament to the leadership of our captains and the character of the team."

Furman finished with a 13-12 edge in total shot attempts and 9-6 advantage in shots on goal while College of Charleston compiled eight corner kicks to three by the Paladins. Sophomore Aaron Salinas stopped four shots in goal for the Paladins and Olly Marshall recorded five saves for the Cougars.

The Paladins return to Stone Stadium on Tuesday, September 24, to host Gardner-Webb in the Gray Griffin Memorial Game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
