Women's Soccer Blanks USC Upstate, 2-0; Paladins Secure Third Consecutive Victory

Mosquera, Massie Net Goals In Sunday Afternoon Victory

Greenville, S.C. – Valentina Mosquera and Maddie Massie netted second half goals to propel Furman to its third straight victory with a 2-0 shutout of USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half in which the Paladins outshot the Spartans 6-1, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal, Furman broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute. Mosquera was tripped in the box and converted from the spot for her first goal of the season at 61:57.

The Paladins (4-4-0) doubled their lead less than five minutes later. Ellie Herrmann served a corner kick towards the top of the box that Mosquera played forward. Ashlyn Goila flicked the ball in the direction of the left post and Massie tapped in a shot from close range at 66:39 to put Furman in front, 2-0.

"We played a strong second half again today and were able to take advantage of a couple chances," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We continue to improve and develop as we get closer to Southern Conference play and that is our goal as a team."

Furman finished with a 19-3 margin in total shot attempts and 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Reese Dejong and Addison Corn each played 45 minutes to combine on the shutout while Upstate's Meghan Groah stopped seven shots in the loss for the Spartans (3-2-1).

Furman returns to action next Sunday when it hosts Tennessee Tech on Senior Day at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
