SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Evangelia Paulk scored 18 points and Wofford used hot 3-point shooting to race past Furman, 68-51, in Southern Conference women's basketball season opening action Sunday afternoon at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Terriers (9-5, 1-0 SoCon), who entered the contest shooting 28.6 percent from 3-point range, connected on 14-of-29 treys (48.3 percent) against the Paladins (10-7, 0-1 SoCon) in cruising to the win.
Paulk, who downed 3-of-5 triples, which she combined with 11 rebounds, led a trio of Wofford double figure scorers that included Helen Matthews with 16 points and Molly Masingale with 13. Â Matthews drained 4-of-8 3-pointers while Masingale connected of 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc.
Both teams came out of the gate with hot shooting, but the separation came in the second quarter when the Terriers built on a 22-19 advantage by accounting for all 15 of their points via the 3-pointer (5x6) to take a commanding 37-23 halftime lead.
Furman, which trailed 57-33 with three minutes to go in the third period, put together a 15-1 run to cut Wofford's lead to 58-48 on a jump shot by
Jada Session with 6:21 remaining, but the Paladins' bid to draw closer ended with two turnovers and a missed shot in their next three possessions. Paulk halted Furman's spurt with a steal and layup with 4:49 left.
Session was the only Paladin to reach double figures with 11 points. Â Furman shot just 33.3 percent from the field (18-of-34), including just 1-of-12 in the decisive second period.
Wofford's work from 3-point range helped the Terriers finish the game shooting 39.3 percent from the field (24x61). Â The Terriers also out-hustled the Paladins on the boards, 40-32.
Furman returns to action on Thursday when it entertains Western Carolina at North Greenville's Hayes Gymnasium in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
