HOMEWOOD, ALA. -- Kennedy Langham scored 16 points and Samford used a decisive second quarter and hot 3-point shooting to cruise to a 77-62 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball on Thursday evening at the Pete Hanna Center.
The victory improves Samford to 6-14 overall on the season and 1-3 in SoCon play while Furman, which has dropped seven of its last nine games, falls to 11-9 and 1-3 in league action.
Leading 21-16 after one quarter, the Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run, keyed by a pair of 3-pointers by Kylee Lewandowski, to go up 34-16 following a 3-ball by Langham five and half minutes into the frame.
Furman halted the run with a 10-0 spurt, aided by three
Jada Session baskets, to trim Samford's advantage to 34-24 before the Bulldogs finished off the period with three straight baskets to take a 40-24 lead into intermission.
Samford put the game on ice with a 24-point third period, fueled by 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range, to extend its lead to 64-41.
The Bulldogs, who entered the contest shooting .336 percent from 3-point range, connected on 12-of-23 shots (.522) from beyond the arc and finished the game hitting on 27-of-54 shots from the field.
Tate Walters led Furman with 21 points, followed by
Jada Session with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Â
Clare Coyle contributed a season high 14 points and nine caroms.
Already weakened following a season ending knee injury sustained by junior starting guard
Niveya Henley in late December, the Paladins were forced to contend against Samford without senior forward
Kate Johnson and freshman guard
Raina McGowens, both of whom are injured.
