GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman swept North Florida, 7-0, Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won two doubles contests to score the opening point. Seniors Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder blew past Isabel Oliveira and Nicole Alfaro Solis, 6-1, at number one, and senior Jess Dawson and sophomore Macy Hitchcock teamed up to beat Laurie Barendse and Anslee Long, 6-1, at flight two. The flight three match was unfinished with seniors Grace Thomas and Alexa Griffith leading Aryana Bartlett and Alisa Lyshko, 4-3. Â
Furman picked up straight-set wins at flights two through four singles to clinch the match. Snyder posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Oliveira at flight two, and senior Marissa Pennings topped Bartlett, 6-3, 6-0, at number three. At flight four, Schulson downed Alfaro Solis, 6-4, 6-3. Â
After the victory was clinched, Dawson held off Barendse, 7-6(5), 4-6, 1-0(10-8), at flight one, and Griffith defeated Lyshko, 6-2, 6-1, at number six. At number five, Hitchcock recorded a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(10-8) advantage over Gabby Goyins for the sweep.Â
The Paladins (2-0) will entertain Appalachian State Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
