TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Paige Lyons poured in a season high 23 points and Courtney Moore scored all of her 17 points in the second half to help power East Tennessee State to a 72-62 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Hayes Gymnasium.
Lyons, a redshirt junior guard, drained 7-of-12 shots and 9-of-11 free throws to pace ETSU (12-9, 3-3 SoCon), Â Moore, meanwhile, failed to scratch in the first half before exploding for 17 points over the game's final 20 minutes and keying the Bucs' 27-point fourth quarter.
Tate Walters paced Furman (12-10, 2-4 SoCon) with 13 points, and
Sydney Ryan followed with the 11 points.
East Tennessee State's sticky defense created 17 Furman turnovers,which the Buccaneers converted into 21 points.
The Buccaneers held a 54-50 lead three minutes into the fourth quarter when Lyons and Moore combined to deliver an 8-1 run to put ETSU up, 62-51, following a Moore jump shot with 4:54 remaining.
After Furman answered with a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 62-55 with 3:57 on the clock, the Buccaneers reeled off eight straight points over the next two minutes for a 70-55 lead.
East Tennessee State shot 53.6 percent from the field (15-of-28) in the decisive second half to finish at 41.4 percent for the game (24-of-58) and also delivered at the free throw line, converting 22-of-27 opportunities in the contest.
Furman shot just 34.0 percent from the field (18-of-54), hitting on only 3-of-17 attempts from 3-point range. Â The Paladins matched the Bucs at the free throw line, making good on 23-of-29 attempts, but ETSU made Furman pay on the turnover front, ringing up a 21-5 scoring differential off miscues.
