Reese DeJong registered seven saves in goal as the Furman women's soccer team rallied to earn a 1-1 draw in Southern Conference play versus Chattanooga on Thursday evening at Finley Stadium.
Chattanooga (8-4-4, 2-2-3 SoCon) took the lead 1:25 into the match. After the Mocs created a turnover along the Paladins' back line, Zoey Mize dribbled into the box and passed to Quinn Johnson on the right side of the box. She settled the ball before firing a shot across goal into the left-hand corner to put the Mocs ahead 1-0.
After the Mocs held Furman's starting 11 without a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, the Chattanooga defense continued to prove stout as the Paladins failed to record a single shot over the first 18 minutes of the second half. In the 74
th minute, Furman earned a free kick outside the top corner of the box.
Ellie Herrmann, who recorded her team-leading fifth assist of the campaign, lofted her free kick to the far, left post where Massie nodded a shot into the back of the net at the 73:48 mark to level the contest at 1-1. The score marked the sixth goal of the season for Massie and 12
thof her career.
DeJong preserved the single point for the Paladins by making a diving stop on Caroline Richvalsky's shot in the 82
ndminute and Chattanooga's Nicole Solete fired over the bar from the right side of the box in the 85
th minute. The stalemate marked the third tie between the Paladins and Mocs in the last four meetings between the schools and Furman's third consecutive draw overall.
"The Southern Conference is extremely competitive this season and there are no easy matches, especially on the road," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "It was good to see our team continue to fight and execute on the set piece to get the tying goal. We'll take our point and turn our focus to another difficult test on Sunday afternoon at Wofford."
Chattanooga finished the match with a 24-8 margin in total shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. DeJong, with her seven saves, earned the decision for the Paladins while Carolina Ekern notched one save for the Mocs.
Furman (8-2-5, 2-1-4 SoCon) is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to face the Wofford Terriers. The Paladins hold a 25-8-4 series lead versus Wofford and claimed a 4-0 victory over the Terriers in Greenville last October. Sunday's match at Snyder Field will be streamed live on ESPN+.
