No. 8 Furman Blanks No. 18 UNC Greensboro In Annual Quinn Game, 2-0

Horvat Earns Fourth Clean Sheet

Greenville, S.C. – Lloyd Wamu Snell and Caleb Johnson netted second half goals to power No. 8 Furman to a 2-0 shutout of 18th-ranked UNC Greensboro in the Quinn Game for Down Syndrome Awareness Saturday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, its fifth straight, Furman improved to 11-1-4 overall and moved into a tie for first place in the SoCon standings with Mercer at 3-0-1 in league play. UNCG dipped to 9-3-4 overall and 2-2-0 in the SoCon.

The Spartans controlled the majority of the first half possession, held an 8-3 edge in shots, and rattled the post in the early going. Furman goalkeeper Ivan Horvat stopped three shots in the opening period to keep the match even and send the teams to the locker room scoreless.

The Paladins delivered the breakthrough in the 57th minute on Snell's first goal of the 2025 season. Ryan Reid fed a pass to Gabe Cox in the box, and he quickly redirected the ball to Snell for a low, left-footed strike that slipped under UNCG's Seth Wilson to put Furman in front, 1-0, at the 56:13 mark.

UNC Greensboro tried to put pressure on Furman's back line as it went in search of the equalizer, but the Paladins sealed the victory in the 82nd minute on Johnson's third goal of the year. Following a Furman corner kick, Luke Munson won the ball in the box and punched a pass through traffic for Johnson to tap into an empty net at 81:47.

"It's outstanding to get the win and a shutout against a very good UNC Greensboro team," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison, who recorded his 360th win at Furman. "To have so many alumni and friends here to support us tonight and to honor Quinn Cronin and her family make it a special moment to all of us. Thank you to everyone who came out tonight."

Furman celebrated 13-year-old Quinn Cronin as she scored her ceremonial goal prior to kickoff, and the Furman family honored Allison, coaching his final regular season SoCon home match, with a framed jersey and the unveiling of a plaque on the stadium wall.

Horvat finished the match with four saves to earn the clean sheet for the Paladins, his fourth of the season. Wilson notched four saves for the Spartans.

UNCG managed a 15-10 advantage in total shot attempts while the Paladins posted a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

Furman is scheduled to play its non-conference finale on Tuesday, October 28, when it hosts Winthrop at 7 p.m. The Paladins travel to face Wofford on November 1 with a chance to wrap up at least a share of the SoCon regular season title with a win.
