Furman Wins Third Straight, Defeats UNCG In Four Sets

Dodson, Morrissey Finish With Double-Doubles

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Tennyson Gorman finished with a match high 14 kills and Quinn Morrissey and Ashtan Dodson both turned in double-doubles Saturday evening to lift the Furman volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17) victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans in Southern Conference action from Alley Gymnasium.

Furman captures its third straight victory, improving to 16-6 overall and 7-3 in the SoCon. UNC Greensboro drops to 12-9 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.

Gorman hit .435 to pace the Paladin offense as Dodson and Izzy Castelloe both totaled double digit kills. Castelloe recorded 13 on .591 hitting and Dodson registered her first career double-double on a career high 12 kills and 11 digs. Morrissey posted her third double-double of the year with 24 assists and 10 digs. Eva Wheeler dished out 20 assists. Ashley Stein led the team with 15 digs and Kennedy Seekford added 14.

Allie Sweet led the Spartans with 11 kills and Chloe Nussbaum contributed 15 digs. Gabby Seeds collected a double-double on 24 assists and 10 digs.

Furman hit .324 in the opening set and held UNCG to .000, winning 25-12 led by Gorman's five kills on .500 hitting. Morrissey had eight assists and Seekford eight digs. The Paladins scored the first six points and opened on a 7-2 run, taking a five-point lead off a Spartan service error. The Spartans would later tie the score at 8-8 before Furman reeled off 12-3 run to go ahead 20-11 after back-to-back kills from Gorman. The Paladins scored five straight points to clinch the set capped by Gorman's kill.

For the second consecutive set, Furman limited UNC Greensboro to .000 hitting in the second while turning in a .286 clip. Castelloe and Gorman combined for seven kills, Wheeler tallied six assists, and Morrissey five digs. The teams split the initial eight points, and the Paladins would hold an early 10-6 lead when Dodson and Gorman combined for a kill. After the Spartans made the score 10-8, Furman would go on an 11-6 run and held a 21-14 advantage when Morrissey recorded back-to-back service aces. Kacie Moore gave the Paladins the 25-16 victory with her kill.

UNCG responded to take the third set, 25-21, but Furman answered in the fourth with a 25-17 triumph to claim the 3-1 victory. The Paladins never trailed in the fourth set and registered a .410 hitting percentage to UNC Greensboro's .086. Dodson and Gorman both had five kills with Gorman hitting .571 and Dodson .333. Morrissey (6), Wheeler (5), and Seekford (4) were responsible for all 15 assists. Three different players finished with four digs each. Furman started on an 8-1 run and held its largest lead at 15-3 on a kill from Castelloe. The Spartans fought back with a 14-5 run and cut the Paladins' lead down to 20-17 late. The Paladins answered by scoring the last five points with Gorman posting three straight kills.

Furman concluded the contest hitting .293 as a team and led 58-35 in kills, 53-33 in assists, and 61-50 in digs. The Paladins totaled eight blocks led by Gorman's six.

Furman is on the road next weekend, October 31-November 1, traveling to The Citadel and Mercer.
