Furman Earns 2-2 Draw Versus First Place Samford

Nixon, Drayton Help Paladins Rally To Secure A Point

Greenville, S.C. – Furman erased a pair of second half deficits to earn a 2-2 draw versus league-leading Samford in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The deadlock moved the Paladins to 8-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in SoCon play while Samford moved to 6-2-5 overall and 3-0-2 in the conference.

"That was a hard-fought draw against a very good Samford team," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "Our team showed a lot of fight to come from behind twice and we had a couple of new goal scorers contribute, which was key for us."

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Samford opened the scoring at the 46:16 mark when Clare Nicholas' long range effort dipped under the cross bar to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Paladins answered less than eight minutes later off a set piece. Furman earned a free kick in the Samford half and Ellie Herrmann curled a long cross towards the far post that freshman Katelyn Nixon one-timed into the right corner with the left foot at 53:51 to put the Paladins on the board.

Samford looked like it might claim all three points when Brooklyn Miller centered a pass for Mamie Carman to tap in for the go-ahead score in the 74th minute, but Furman found the late equalizer. Freshman Jessica Mattson created space for herself at the top of the box and rattled the cross bar with her strike before graduate student Briyah Drayton nodded in the rebound for her first goal as a Paladin at the 84:16 mark to knot the match at 2-2.

Nicholas and Mattson both narrowly missed giving their teams the potential winning goal in the waning moments of the match before the Paladins and Bulldogs settled for one point apiece. The 2-2 tie marked the third straight regular season draw in the series between Furman and Samford.

The Bulldogs concluded the match with a 13-12 edge in total shots and 7-4 advantage in shots on goal while Furman held a 6-4 margin in corner kicks awarded.

Sophomore Reese DeJong made five saves in goal for the Paladins and Samford's Peyton Hull finished the day with two saves.

Furman continues its homestand on Friday when it hosts ETSU for Cancer Awareness Night at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and admission is free. The match will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
