Cedar Falls, Iowa – Trey Campbell scored 18 points to lead five Panthers in double figures and Furman connected on just 4-of-30 three-point attempts as Northern Iowa downed the Paladins, 70-54, Friday evening at the McLeod Center.
Campbell went 6-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-6 behind the arc, while Ben Schwieger posted 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Leon Bond III and Tristan Smith totaled 13 points apiece and Will Hornseth finished with 11 and a team-high eight boards.
Both teams started slow offensively as Furman missed its first 10 three-point tries and UNI connected on less than 25% of its shots in the opening 10 minutes. Bond III caught fire midway through the half and scored five straight points as part of an 8-0 Panther run that gave UNI a 20-12 lead.
Charles Johnston stopped the run with Furman's first triple, but Hornseth netted three straight baskets to restore the Panthers' double-digit advantage as UNI carried a 36-24 lead into the halftime break.
Trailing by 15 in the second half, the Paladins battled to trim the deficit to 10 points at 45-35, but UNI answered with a 10-0 run, capped by back-to-back slams by Smith to extend the margin to 55-45 with 8:32 remaining. The Paladins got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Furman shot 39% from the field, 13% from three, and went just 6-for-11 at the foul line.
Cooper Bowser's 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting led the way for the Paladins while Johnston notched his third double-double in four games with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Alex Wilkins added 10 points and four assists.
The Panthers (3-0) converted on 46% of their shots from the floor despite a 6-for-20 effort from three-point range. UNI went 14-of-17 at the foul line and managed a 35-33 edge on the glass.
Furman (1-3) returns home to host Ohio Christian on Wednesday, November 19, at Timmons Arena. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
