Furman Falls At Clemson In Season Finale, 45-10

Hedden Eclipses Furman Single Season Passing Yards Mark

Clemson, S.C. – Cade Klubnik connected with Antonio Williams on a pair of first-half touchdowns and Clemson raced out to a 31-0 lead en route to a 45-10 victory over Furman on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

After Furman held the Tigers to a 45-yard Nolan Hauser field goal on their opening drive, Klubnik and the Clemson offense took advantage of a 30-yard Williams punt return by covering 41 yards in six plays, culminating in a 22-yard touchdown strike to Williams. A 21-yard touchdown run by Tyler Brown upped the Clemson lead to 17-0 after one quarter before Klubnik connected with Williams on a 35-yard scoring strike on the second play of the second quarter to extend the Clemson advantage to 24-0.

Following an interception by Clemson's Sammy Brown that set the Tigers up at the Furman 22 yard line, Christopher Vizzina found Christian Bentancur on a six-yard scoring toss to extend the margin to 31-0 with 6:48 to go in the half. Furman got on the board with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter when graduate student Ian Williams booted a 49-yard field goal to cap an eight-play, 48-yard drive to trim the deficit to 31-3 at the break.

The Paladins forced Clemson to punt on its first two drives of the third quarter and Trey Hedden engineered a six-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to freshman Evan James to help Furman cut the Tigers' lead to 31-10 after three quarters.

After forcing Clemson into a third straight punt, Furman drove into the redzone, but Williams' 42-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. The Tigers answered with a 75-yard drive as Chris Denson rushed for 69 yards before hitting Logan Brooking on a four-yard touchdown pass to up the Clemson lead to 38-10 with 7:45 left. Denson added a 10-yard touchdown run with nine seconds remaining to cap the scoring.

Clemson finished with 456 yards of total offense, including 237 through the air and 219 on the ground. Klubnik completed 9-of-15 passes for 159 yards and two scores while Denson carried the ball six times for 106 yards and a touchdown to go with his passing score to Brooking.

Hedden completed 22-of-38 passes for 179 yards to surpass Ingle Martin's single season school record of 2,959 passing yards. Furman's Kerry King caught six passes for 71 yards while James grabbed six passes for 36 yards and a score.

Defensive end Joshua Stoneking posted a sack and three tackles-for-a-loss to finish the regular season atop FCS with 14.5 sacks and 23 tackles-for-a-loss.

Furman concludes its season at 6-6. Clemson, 6-5 on the season, closes out the regular season at South Carolina next Saturday.
