Furman's James Named Jerry Rice Award Finalist

Set School Freshman Records For Receptions, Receiving Yards, TD Catches This Season

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman wide receiver Evan James is among 25 finalists for the 2025 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the national freshman player of the year in college football's Division I FCS subdivision.

James, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound product of Apopoka, Fla., caught a team leading 65 passes for 796 yards and seven touchdowns and also rushed for a score this season for the Paladins, setting new school freshman records in all three categories despite missing three games due to injury.

His 65 catches ranked fourth overall, 796 receiving yards seventh all-time, and seven touchdowns tied for eight  all-time in a season among all Paladin receivers.

In 2018 Furman bandit Adrian Hope finished fourth in balloting — and was the top defensive player finisher — for the Jerry Rice Award after pacing the FCS with 15.0 sacks.

True and redshirt freshmen are eligible for the Jerry Rice Award, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary season and is named after the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver, who starred in the FCS at Mississippi Valley State University.

The recipient, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced on Dec. 3 and honored at the Stats Perform National Awards Show on Jan. 3 in Nashville, Tenn.
